Palm oil is the world's most widely used edible oil and is found in thousands of products including food, chocolate, beverages, cosmetics, and cleaning products. Malaysia is the world's second largest producer of palm oil with more than 18 million tons of crude palm oil (CPO) produced in 2013 - almost one million Malaysians derive their livelihood on this critical industry.
Malaysian artist Jacky Chin, a resident of Kuala Lumpur, created this original watercolour painting which depicts the labor intensive harvesting of the fresh fruit bunches (FFB) which contain hundreds of reddish coloured fruit. The fruit is about the size of a small plum and the FFB can weigh up to 50 kg., with about 25% being oil. The oil palm gives the highest yield of oil per unit area compared to any other edible oil crop and produces two distinct oils – palm oil and palm kernel oil – each having its own distinct set of properties utilised in further product refinement.
